WINTER WATERING TIPS

Winters in Colorado can have extended warm, dry, windy spells. While a winter without snow may appeal to some people, it is not our favorite because it causes winter drought. Trees, shrubs, and perennials at risk from dry winters include all recent transplants, evergreens, and shallow rooted species such as lindens, birches, and maples. Please remember that failure to support your landscape with supplemental watering constitutes neglect and may negate any warranties and guarantees associated with your plantings and installation.

November Gardening Tips

With winter almost upon us, out come the sweaters and woolies. People can protect themselves from the harsh weather quite well. However, what do plants do when the wind is too chilly or too harsh? Just like you and me, plants also need protection from the wind, the cold and the snow.

The best thing to do for your plants in November is to mulch. This protects perennial plants from the harsh cold by preventing them from freezing.

Why clean your gutters in the fall?

During a rainstorm or after a snowstorm, gutters help to route runoff from your roof. By doing so, they protect siding, windows, doors and foundations from water damage. They also play a key role in preventing flooding in basements. To do their job, gutters and downspouts must be clear of all leaves and debris. If they are not clean, drain outlets can dam up and water will fill the gutters, back up, and eventually, can actually pull the gutters loose from their mountings. Water that pools in troughs can rot wood gutters and rust metal ones.

Gardening Odds & Ends For October

Slugs
You probably get sick of hearing it, but get rid of those slugs. When the rain comes this month, put out a last application of slug bait. It will rid your garden of slugs reproducing before it freezes. That means fewer slugs next spring.

Weeds
One last effort at weeding will improve the appearance of your beds throughout the winter. Any weeds eliminated this fall will prevent thousands of seeds sprouting next spring.

Prevent Raking Related Injuries

Ahh, the rakes and pains of fall. Raking leaves and other debris from the fall season can be hard on the back, shoulders, wrist and hands. These tips from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons will assist you to prevent raking related injuries.

· Walk through your yard. Pick up fallen branches, tree limbs or debris that may cause you to trip and fall.
· Stretch. Warm up muscles for 10 minutes with light exercise. Stretch your muscles after raking to relieve tension.
· Pace yourself. Take frequent breaks and drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.

KEEPING UP APPEARANCES

September is a great time to be planting new perennials. Planting this month gives new plants an opportunity to get established before cold weather bears down on them. It is vital to give new plants some extra care when temperatures are high and rainfall low. Here are some tips:
· Water plants consistently
· Weed regularly
· Apply mulch
· Snip off spent blooms

Bindweed: Convolvulus arvensis

Bindweed is a common sight in some yards and is also know as wild morning glory and creeping jenny. Be aware of bindweed. It is a noxious weed that is difficult to eradicate because of its extensive root system. Bindweed vines sprawl with a prostrate growth habit. It delights in climbing fences as well as other plants.

Pulling the weeds generally is not an effective control due to the tremendous root system. However, regular, persistent pulling may gradually starve the root system.

Gardening Ergonomics

To avoid injury in your garden:

· Create wide garden paths for safer walking
· Use labor-saving wheelbarrows, carts and dollies.
· Alternate sitting and standing positions at 30 minute intervals
· Keep your work close to you. Minimize reaching. Use long handled tools instead of reaching
· Look for ergonomic tools.
· Introduce raised beds, containers and trellises...bringing the garden closer to you.
· Bend at the hips not at the waist. Use both arms whenever possible.
· Use kneepads to protect your knees.

Relaxing in the Garden and Other July Tips

This July declare your independence from the gardening grind by becoming a lazy gardener. Although there are some chores that you will still need to do yourself (or ask Detailed Landscape to do it for you), other tasks can be handled with a little ingenuity.

Save Your shade

Attractive and healthy trees need enough water at the right times. Trees pull water from the soil and lose most of it through tiny pores in the leaves by evaporation or transpiration. Since established trees show stress symptoms slowly, most homeowners completely overlook maintaining the water needs of the most valuable landscape investment they own. Water stress is a major maintenance concern with both recent transplants and established trees.
